PAMPA Dance Academy has been exemplary in blending both traditional and modern stage design techniques to enthrall its audiences, without diluting the purity of the art form. At PAMPA, we believe that while the dance itself is the most important component of a performance, the art of stage design and innovative lighting also form an integral part of the appreciation of dance.

In order to enhance the overall classical dance experience in the Bay Area, PAMPA was founded in California by Purna Prasad in 1992. The vision behind PAMPA Dance Academy roots from the mentorship of Vidwan Sri Gopinath Das, a Harikatha (storyteller) and creator of several Indian classical dance dramas. Nirmala Madhava is the chief choreographer and instructor of PAMPA Dance Academy.

She teaches both Bharata Natyam and Kathak dance forms and is recognized internationally as a Master solo performer. In 2015, PAMPA Dance Academy had the honorable opportunity to perform at a community reception for Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at the SAP Center in San Jose, CA.

Bharata Natya, though it originated in India, evolved mainly in Southern India.
It originated based on the main treatise of Indian classical dance - Bharata's Natya Sastra and a second text, Abhinaya Darpana, which deals with the emotive part of dance.
The Natya Sastra gives you the basis of dance, all the foundational steps and it also talks extensively about theatre and theatre science.
It was initially restricted to being performed in temples and then slowly became more widespread in performance venues.
Kathak evolved in Northern India during the Bhakti movement around the eighth century CE.
Kathakaars or storytellers performed this style of dance in various temples telling stories from Indian mythology.
Kathak is mainly characterized by extremely complex footwork and pirouettes.
It is a very graceful form of dance without much rigidity.
There are three main schools in Kathak - Lucknow, Benaras, and Jaipur gharanas.
Guru Nirmala Madhava is part of the Lucknow gharana.
I don't believe that classical dance is a rigid form where there is no scope for any kind of change.
