Ongoing belly dance classes for beginners to professionals in Berkeley, California, at the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance. In addition to over 15 years of teaching experience, she holds an MA in Dance Studies from Mills College, is a Qualified TotalBarre Instructor, and is only one of a handful of dancers in the world to hold Level 5 certification in the esteemed Suhaila Salimpour and Jamila Salimpour belly dance Formats.

Dear Karen, I have heard you say over and over again that you want to keep politics out of dance. It's been over 50 days since the San Francisco Bay Area counties issued their stay-at-home order.
Services
Dancers in the Salimpour School of Dance are invited to join their local Salimpour Collective after they have earned Level 1 in either the Suhaila or Jamila Salimpour Formats.
Salimpour Collectives learn and perform repertoire by Suhaila Salimpour and advanced dancers in the program.
They are inclusive of all ages, genders, and ethnicities, with hobbyist and professional-level performers working side-by-side in a fun, supportive environment.
The Berkeley Salimpour Collective performs at cultural and community events in the San Francisco Bay Area, and dancers certified Level 4 (Advanced Performer) and higher are available for hire for your special event.

I've been taking classes from Abby on a consistent basis for at least three years.
She is a GREAT teacher and is very good at looking at an individual and figuring out what techniques work for them and their body.
I have greatly improved my skill level and also my body awareness while studying with her.
Private lessons are also a fantastic time to ask all of those questions you had during group classes but didn't have time to ask!
I love working with dancers one-on-one.
We can focus on you and your needs, and address them in a way that is best suited for your learning style.
Yes, online private lessons work!
I've been working with students in Australia, Taiwan, and Belgium (to name a few places) for many years with resounding success!
Take an in-person private lesson with me at the beautiful Mahea Uchiyama Center for International dance.
A very, very condensed history of the region commonly known as the "Middle East."
Starting with the origins of Islam through to the post 9/11 world, this lecture traces the political, social, and cultural forces that shaped the region and their relation to belly dance.
Part lecture, part experiential workshop, this class introduces the major muscles and joints we use for belly dance, how to develop awareness in them, and how they function.
This class series introduces the key elements of Turkish style belly dance and includes an exciting Turkish Oryantal style choreography inspired by Turkish belly dancers Tulay Karaca and Artemis Mourat.
You'll receive personal feedback, connect with dancers around the world, and keep up with your practice.
Skype private lessons (or platform of your choice) are a fantastic way to get exactly what you need.
Let's work together to help you be the best dancer you can be!
Through the Salimpour School Online, you can take dozens of classes on-demand with me in technique and drills (Suhaila Format), classic belly dance steps (Jamila Format), and learn my choreographies.
You can also take my classes on anatomy for belly dancers, Middle Eastern history, and much more!
